  5. National Tree Week 2020...

tree week

Coillte had again partnered with the Tree Council of Ireland for National Tree Week 2020. National Tree Week 2020 took place from 21st – 27th March 2020 and this year’s theme was “Healthy Trees Healthy Planet”.

  • Coillte have donated up to 30,000 native trees for planting during National Tree Week 2020 doubling numbers on previous years.
  • Almost half a million trees have been planted during National Tree Week since 1989.
  • Trees were made available for collection across the country through County Councils.

This year’s theme aimed to promote tree health and the important role trees play in protecting our planet by taking on climate change and providing natural renewable resources. Trees are vital for life. They are the biggest plants on earth, they provide us with oxygen to breath, provide habitats and fruits for many species to enjoy and play an important role in carbon sequestration.

Schools, companies and community groups were encouraged to participate in events that occurred over National Tree Week. To learn more information about National Tree Week, please visit www.treecouncil.ie or www.coillte.ie.

Farmers have planted over 1.6 million trees under the GLAS scheme. The GLAS scheme (Green, Low-carbon, Agri-Environmental Scheme) is an agri-environmental initiative under the current Rural Development Programme 2014-2020 where farmers are incentivised to implement measures on their farms with agri-environmental benefits. Planting a grove of native trees was an option available to farmers in the GLAS scheme. This measure provides a wide range of ecological benefits and creates habitats for both plants and animals and provides the potential for carbon sequestration.
