The deadline for applying to become a participant village/rural town in the Smart Rural 21 project, supported by the European Commission, was the 11th of May 2020. There was huge interest in the call with a total of 736 applications submitted from rural areas and communities across Europe, of which 25 were from the Republic of Ireland. Applications will be reviewed and assessed by the Smart Rural project team over the next few weeks, and the remaining 12 chosen villages to participate in the project are expected to be announced by the end of June 2020.
