Speaking at the Farmer4Safety- Managing Risk Together EIP-Agri Conference, Minister of State Martin Heydon stressed the importance of the project in tackling the challenge of engaging with farmers, their families and the community. The end of project conference took place on Thursday 2nd March in Talbot Hotel Clonmel.

The farm safety EIP-Agri project focused on peer-to-peer mentoring and a wide range of activities with the aim of raising awareness of health and safety, mental health and well-being on farms.

Led by Irish Rural Link, the project was partnered with Biodiversity Regeneration in a Dairying Environment (BRIDE) project, the Duncannon Blue Flag Farming and Communities Scheme, the New Futures Farming Group and the Health and Safety Authority (HSA).

Project Manager Niamh Nolan says Farmers4Safety offers a peer-to-peer mentor approach that is tailored to the farming community with the appointment of farm safety mentors in each catchment area.

“This effective bottom-up approach has proven to be successful in the three regions and from the results and comments from the participants involved in the project they have found it very beneficial to them in addressing farm safety, health and well-being.”

At the conference, the mentors spoke of how the programme encourages farmers to be open and comfortable when speaking to their peers on matters such as mental health, stress and well-being.

As part of the event, a farm safety song entitled “When You’re Working on the Farm” was launched and performed by children from local school Rosegreen National School, Cashel, Co. Tipperary. The song aims to promote farm safety among children aged between 4 and 12 by highlighting some of the dangers on Irish farms.

A final project report will be published on the website soon.
