The National Rural Network (NRN) recently visited the family run farm of Michael Feehily in Ballydangan, Co. Roscommon, a suckler Limousin cross herd. Michael brought us on a walk of his farm and showed us the mineral soil running into peat soils/cut away bog. He also talked to us about his participation in the GLAS scheme and his involvement in the EIP-Agri project ‘FarmPEAT’ – a results based environmental pilot programme.
Michael has been passionate about the beautiful landscapes, the biodiversity and restoring what he can of the habitat and vegetation to its more natural state. Michael promotes knowledge transfer to the younger generation to teach them about the vital importance of maintaining and enhancing nature and continuing education on biodiversity, wildlife and how we farm the landscapes. He also explains that farming the land is not just inside the farm gate, it expands into the greater community.
