Two awards were won by the Loop Head Peninsula community in West Clare at the National IPB Pride of Place Awards in Dublin. They not only won the Islands & Coastal Communities Category, but also the Climate Action Special Prize for the Hemp4Soil EIP Project which studies the potential for increasing soil quality and biodiversity while establishing alternative, sustainable income streams for Loop Head farms.
The project involves ten local farmers who, in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, as well as local scientific and biodiversity experts, are investigating how cultivating HEMP on the land could not only improve the overall quality of the soil and benefit local biodiversity, but also provide farmers with future streams of sustainable income.
