EIP-AGRI Upland Projects in Action Week 2021 Recap

The Irish National Rural Network ran an ‘EIP-AGRI Upland Projects in Action Week’ from the 8th to 12th of February 2021. This initiative highlighted the background, aims, activities and lessons learned to date of Ireland’s five Upland EIP-AGRI Operational Group Projects funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) under the Rural Development Programme (RDP) 2014-2020.

Day 1: MacGillycuddy Reeks EIP Project

We kicked off our ‘EIP-AGRI Upland Projects in Action Week’ with an overview of the aims and activities of the MacGillycuddy Reeks EIP Project, as well as an insight into its lessons learned to date from its project manager, Patricia Deane. A Video Blog (Vlog) from a young farmer who is participating in the project, along a list of recent publications from this Operational Group were also featured within our MacGillycuddy Reeks EIP Project promotional database.

Day 2: Inishowen Upland Farmers EIP Project

Day 2 of our ‘EIP-AGRI Upland Projects in Action Week’ highlighted the various innovative methods being tested by the Inishowen Upland Farmers EIP Project, in Co. Donegal, as well as the subsequent lessons learned from such activities. Links to informative articles about this project by both the EIP-AGRI Service Point and Teagasc, as well as to its website and social media accounts, were also featured within our ‘One-Stop-Shop’ Inishowen Upland Farmers EIP Project compilation of resources.

Day 3: SUAS (Sustainable Uplands Agri-environment Scheme) Project

The next project featured as part of our ‘EIP-AGRI Upland Projects in Action Week’ was the SUAS (Sustainable Uplands Agri-environment Scheme) Project that is addressing some of the complex challenges associated with the land management of commonages and hill farms in the Wicklow/Dublin uplands.

Day 4: Blackstairs Farming Futures (BFF) Project

Day 4 of our #EIPAgri Upland Projects in Action Week featured the innovative work being carried out by the Blackstairs Farming Futures Project. This project aims to develop a new revenue stream for commonage farmers in the Blackstairs Mountains for the delivery of innovative ecosystem services whilst simultaneously improving habitat condition in the local SAC and adjacent semi-natural habitats.

Day 5: North Connemara Locally Led Agri-environmental Scheme (NCLLAES)

The North Connemara Locally Led Agri-environmental Scheme was the final project featured in our ‘EIP-AGRI Upland Projects in Action Week’. This project aims to ensure the long-term economic viability of hill farming in the Twelve Bens/Maumturks area through the development of sustainable and innovative agricultural management practices to restore, preserve and enhance the biodiversity of this unique Natura 2000 area.
