Public Consultation on Ireland’s Draft Nitrates Action Programme

Sep 24, 2021 | Climate Change News

Draft Nitrates Action Programme

In early August, the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien T.D. and the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue T.D., announced a second public consultation for Ireland’s Draft Nitrates Action Programme.

Consultation is an essential step in developing measures that will underpin Ireland’s 5th Nitrates Action Programme (NAP).

Ireland’s NAP gives effect to the requirements of the Nitrates Directive, a critical piece of legislation that farmers implement on their farms to meet objectives of good water quality in our groundwater, rivers, lakes, and estuaries.

The current regulations expire at the end of 2021, and a new Nitrates Action Programme is scheduled to be published in early 2022; revised regulations will remain in place until 2025.

The consultation paper is available here.  The closing date for receipt of responses was September 20th, 2021.
