Climate Change and Agriculture – past, present and future

Nov 6, 2018 | Climate Change News

The National Rural Network, in association with the Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine (DAFM), hosted a special seminar on the relationship between climate change and agriculture in Tullamore, Co, Offaly on Thursday 1 November 2018. More than 60 agricultural advisors, researchers and other stakeholders attended this important event.

The seminar included contributions from DAFM and Teagasc, as well as leading researchers from NUI Maynooth, NUI Galway, the Irish Farmer’s Association, the Agricultural Consultants Association and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Participants heard how climate change is likely to affect Irish agriculture in years to come and what farmers can do to address the envisaged challenges. Details of the impact of the ongoing fodder crises will also be presented.

Presentations from the seminar can be downloaded below:

  1. Climate Change & Agriculture, New Innovations & Communication strategies for a climate resilient Ireland

  2. Grass growth 2018 – A wake up call

  3. Ireland’s Changing Climate

  4. NRN Climate Change Workshop Agenda

  5. Overview of Adaptation Planning Requirements

Chairing the event, the NRN’s Phillip Farrelly said, “Climate change presents a real and definitive challenge to Irish agriculture, and it will take a coordinated effort by all stakeholders to mitigate the impact.

“The Rural Development Plan 2014-2020 is addressing climate by funding actions that will help reduce the impacts of climate change. Farmer participation in the GLAS Scheme, Beef Data Genomics Programme (BDGP), Organic Farming Scheme (OFS), Knowledge Transfer (KT) Scheme, and the Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme (TAMS) are designed to help address climate action.

“It is important that all stakeholders in Ireland’s agricultural sector combine their efforts to promote change and best practice thus encouraging farmers to adapt to technologies which will ultimately help reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions from the sector and enhance resilience.
