The NRN participated in the first meeting of the European Network for Rural Development (ENRD) Thematic Group on Rural Proofing was held virtually on the 27th January 2022. The Thematic Group was launched by the ENRD to support the design and implementation of rural proofing mechanisms within Member States at national, regional and local levels. Rural proofing mechanisms ensure that all policies are aligned with the needs of rural areas.
The first meeting of the Thematic Group on Rural Proofing provided an overview of the experiences, successes and challenges of rural proofing in different countries. This meeting also kicked off the discussion on how to design effective rural proofing mechanisms while taking into account differing contexts and levels of administration.
The meeting included ten presentations from rural development and policy experts within the EU, covering rural proofing approaches, rural policy design, examples from Northern Ireland, Spain, Finland and Sweden and possible future directions for rural proofing.
