As we move further into 2020 attention is turning to the next Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and how it will unfold and impact the future of European and Irish agriculture. The Irish Farmers Journal, in collaboration with the European Commission’s representation in Ireland, hosted a live webinar on Thursday June the 4th with the Director-General of the Directorate-General Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRI) Mr. Wolfgang Burtscher to discuss the new CAP and the many elements within it.

Mr Burtscher relayed many different elements in how the new CAP may look, including the move to have increased flexibility.  To do this, the European Commission plans to hand control to individual member states to design their own schemes, versus a blanket policy for all member states. Such a move aims to recognise the diversity of agriculture across the EU and hand over more control to member states.

Other aspects discussed included the CAP budget going forward, the adoption of more environmental schemes in line with the EU Green Deal and the aim to make food production more sustainable.
